Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Review: My Impressions

I received the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 laptop with 16 GB RAM, which cost around $999. Since it’s marketed as a laptop for businesses and entrepreneurs, I decided not to test any games on this device since it’s meant for something other than gaming.

Therefore, after tinkering with it for two days, I found this laptop to be excellent, except for some minor flaws. Read on to learn more about my experience with this business laptop.

Design: Made For Entrepreneurs

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 design is made with entrepreneurs in mind. It’s minimalistic and sleek, except for some exceptions, like the keyboard layout. It has a round fingerprint scanner/power button on the right.

My ThinkPad E14 was the one with the  Graphite Black, which looks sleek and premium. It looks as sleek as the Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15 AMD. However, looks-wise, it looks like the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3.

Moreover, it also seems tough, judging from my experience with it. Its hinges don’t wobble under the fan, and it feels sturdy. With a weight of 3.3 lbs, it can easily be carried around in your bag, making it an excellent portable laptop for people on the go. Therefore, this laptop satisfied my expectations regarding its looks and build quality.

Display: Small, But Great

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 touchscreen display is a good one. Even though it has a smaller 14” WUXGA touchscreen, its FHD+ resolution (1920 x 2000) makes it look sharper. Moreover, the colors were also crisp and vivid, which was apparent as I made colorful PowerPoint presentations.

This WUXGA (Wide Screen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) screen provides excellent color on the screen with improved brightness. Therefore, Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse looks perfect with the 366 Nits brightness of this laptop.

Couple that with solid color saturation and DCI-P3 color gamut, and you will simultaneously get a fantastic display here for work and cinema.

However, the only flaw here is the size – it’s a smaller 14” screen. I wish it had a big 17” screen like the HP Laptop 17.

Keyboard And Touchpad: That Signature Red Rub Again

Like every other ThinkPad and IdeaPad laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 also has the signature red nub in the middle of the keyboard. In case you didn’t know, it acts like a trackpad, except it is the size of a pea.

However, besides the red nub, everything else also represents the IdeaPad brand – professional, sleek, and durable. Typing on the IdeaPad E14 keyboard feels smooth and tactile. While they might not be as good as a mechanical keyboard, the keys are still quite good.

The touchpad is also quite big – enough to comfortably use it without needing a mouse – something which I don’t. If you have read any of my other reviews, I always use a mouse with a laptop. This time, I didn’t need one. Moreover, it supported Windows 11 gestures perfectly.

Webcam: More Than Just Good

When I first looked at myself on Discord while using the Lenovo IdeaPad E14 webcam, I was taken aback. I wasn’t expecting a 1080p webcam of this laptop to perform this well.

The picture quality is as good as the Apple MacBook Air M1 webcam. The video quality is pretty good, with no graininess. Moreover, it also performed quite well on low-light settings.

Speakers: Sounds Good

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 speakers are nothing special, but they sound good. The speaker is loud enough to fill everyone’s ears if you are inside your room. Moreover, the depth of the sound is quite good, with aptly equalized bass, mid, and treble on Apple Music Classical.

Connectivity And Ports: It Will Suffice

The Lenovo IdeaPad E14 Gen 5 has a good collection of ports, which you can see from the specification table. It leaves nothing more to be desired – except for an SD card slot as the cherry on top. Moreover, it has Bluetooth 5.2 and Wifi 6 for fast wireless connectivity.

Battery Life: Cut Short

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 battery life is the laptop’s most significant flaw – a big drawback.

This laptop is a business-class laptop. Therefore, a short battery life is the last thing you want to see during a meeting or presentation. This is where the ThinkPad E14 fails to perform.

As stated, I won’t be testing any games here. Therefore, all I did was write posts for this website with many tabs open and some occasional YouTube videos in between. In addition,  I watched many movies and the latest season of Vinland Saga.

Disappointingly, the battery lasted for only 7.5 hours. This is far lower than cheap laptops like the Acer Aspire 5 and the Dell Inspiron 15.

Performance: Just What Every Professional Needs

While its battery life is not up to the mark, it compensates for it with its business-class performance. If you want a powerful laptop that makes multitasking smooth, the Lenovo IdeaPad E14 will suit your needs perfectly.

The latest 13th-generation Intel Core i7-1355U processor makes everything smooth and responsive. Its performance is close to that of the i7-13700K processor. Couple it with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD; you can carry your business in your laptop!

However, the Intel Iris Xe processor will only cut it if you want to do graphically intensive tasks. While you can use Adobe Photoshop easily, you will struggle with Adobe Premiere Pro and any 3D software like Blender

However, you can do simpler video edits and animations using these apps. But you will see the machine slowing down once you edit 2k and 4k videos and render complex 3D animations.

Moreover, gaming is off the charts. Well, maybe League of Legends, DOTA II, and World of Warcraft aren’t.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 For 2024: Deal Or No Deal?

With a broad price range starting from $699 and going all the way up to $1,900, the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 is a great machine for thinkers. Whether you use it for your university studies or starting your new startup, it will perfectly serve your needs.

While it’s not meant for gamers, professional video editors, and 3D animators, you can easily open tens of tabs of office docs, sheets, and presentations. This makes it one of the best laptops for entrepreneurs and corporate professionals. Moreover, it has a slim form and a sleek look as well!

ProsCons
• Sleek design
• Good build quality
• Great keyboards
• Good webcam
• Vivid display
Battery life under performs
• Poor gaming performance
