Turtle Beach Recon 70 Review:

After using this headset for a few days, here is a detailed explanation of my experiences with it so far:

1. Build Quality

Because of its black and red finish, the Recon 70’s plastic shell struggles to avoid seeming cheap. There wasn’t much bending as I twisted the cupping and the band. However, this appeared to collapse if I applied a bit of force past the bending point.

A groove with a Turtle Beach logo and the band’s connection point runs down the center of the matte-black earcups. The larger, black band with the Turtle Beach emblem has three aesthetically good, glossy indents on either side. These hold the more prominent black band with the red linking band just above the cup together.

The cups’ inside is red and have black Turtle Beach emblems on them. I tested the Nintendo Switch edition of the Recon 70, which I found similar to the Monorpice 110010.

Nevertheless, the Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 70 is available in various hues designated for compatibility. Therefore, the color of this headset depends on its compatibility with the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

The Recon 70 has a small number of controls; there is just one, the volume rocker, located on the left cup. The 4-foot, 3.5mm audio wire and a small, permanent flip-to-mute microphone are both located on the left cup.

2. Comfort

The synthetic-leather ear cups of the Recon 70 are rather cozy and fit over my ears well, although I wish the foam cushion were a touch softer. Another cushion, which wasn’t too stiff but might have been much better, is located beneath the band.

The band is simple to change. However, there are no notches to show where it is balanced. Yet after a few hours, I realized I was using the headset! In all honesty, you couldn’t do worse at $50.

Turtle Beach Recon

The Recon 70 weighs only 9.5 ounces and feels remarkably light. It was also wholly stationary when I turned my neck from right to left.

My major complaint with the Turtle Beach Recon 70 is how the mic moves. Whenever I flip it to one of its preset locations, the entire headset vibrates, giving me a headache after a time.

3. Noise Isolation

The Turtle Beach Headset Recon 70 gaming headset performs poorly regarding noise isolation. They hardly offer any isolation in the bass area, where you may hear bus and airline engines rumbling.

You could listen to abundant backdrop talk from people around since they don’t deal with ambient noise much better in the mid-range. They function slightly better when exposed to higher-pitched sounds, such as the hum of an air conditioner.

The performance of the leaks could be better. Their audio leakage is primarily mid-range, so the sound that does escape is rather full-bodied. Other people around are probably hearing whatever you’re listening to if you play your music loudly in a peaceful setting.

4. Controls

The physical control method of the Turtle Beach Recon 70 is simple to use yet unreliable. The left ear cup has a volume wheel that pauses once you reach the highest or lowest volume. They lack playback controls but do include a flip-up boom microphone. Here, the Sennheiser Game One gaming headset has better controls.

5. Connectivity

The Recon 70 connects simply as quickly as you might anticipate. It only requires a simple plug-in to connect it since it uses a 3.5mm headphone connector.

On the left are a volume slider and a connected mic that you may flip up to mute. Well, it’s elementary stuff, but getting used to it isn’t too tricky.

6. Mic Quality

The Turtle Beach Recon 70 has a more precise microphone than other gaming headphones we’ve tested, despite the inconsistent audio output. I’ve used headphones that cost ten times as much as this one and received less accurate mic sounds, like the Astro A40 TR headset + Mixamp Pro 2017 and the Steelseries Arctis 3 2019 edition wireless.

If there’s anything to quibble about, it’s the loudness because this microphone is relatively quiet. You will need to make some adjustments if the chat service you use doesn’t have automatic gain adjustment. Expect a fairly great-sounding mic once it is resolved.

6. Sound Quality

With its underemphasized bass and sub-bass outputs and a modest drop in the 3 – 4 kHz region, the Turtle Beach Recon 70 provides relatively muted sound for a gaming headset. It is quite unexpected to observe this under-emphasis because gaming headphones frequently experience the reverse problem when the bass is amplified to the highest possible level.

Forceful bass lines may sound less dominant in music than they should due to this frequency response. The bassy beat that runs throughout Kendrick Lamar’s Humble is a perfect illustration of this. It fades into simply another background sound rather than maintaining the song’s pace as it should.

In games, this kind of output is not exactly a problem. This is because the layering and blending of sounds in a particular gaming scenario are typically more straightforward than music. You won’t have any trouble hearing them even if the roar of an explosive is far less than it should be at that particular moment.

Best Turtle Beach 70 Recon Gaming Headset Alternatives

If what you read about the Turtle Beach Recon 70 didn’t seem exciting, then here are the best Turtle Beach Recon 70 alternatives that you can buy in 2024:

1. SteelSeries Arctis 3 2019 Edition Wireless

Price: $129

The SteelSeries Arctis 3 is an amazing wireless headphone for gamers and audiophiles. Many gaming publications – like Polygon – voted it the Best Headset for Switch in 2020.

While it has support for both wired and wireless connectivity, we recommend using it wired for gaming. However, if you are outside and listening to music on your smartphone, use the Bluetooth mode.

2. Sennheiser Game One Gaming Headset

Price: $114

If you want a classy-looking headset that will quench gamers’ thirst, the Sennheiser Game One Gaming Headset will undoubtedly quench your thirst. These open-backed headphones have exceptional sound quality for the price, which will impress even the most picky audiophiles.

Moreover, it weighs very little, making it feel like you have nothing on your ears and head, even after long gaming sessions. However, it has only one con – its mic. In the heat of a virtual war, your commands to your teammates might fall on deaf ears. As a gamer, I found this to be the only con. Otherwise, this headset is excellent.

3. Astro A40 Tr Headset + Mixamp Pro 2017

Price: $129

I love Logitech as a gamer. They have created some of the best gaming peripherals I have ever used. While their gaming mice and headphones are super popular amongst streamers, their Astro A40 TR Headset fell under the radar for most. Therefore, it’s by far their most underrated headset.

It has exceptional sound quality, bolstered by the Mixamp Pro for pristine sound quality. Moreover, it’s compatible with every console out there, minus the Nintendo Switch. However, I recommend this for PC gamers as it’s the only platform that allows you to use the Mixamp Pro.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy The Turtle Beach Recon 70 Gaming Headset In 2023?

The Turtle Beach Recon 70 is a good choice for console gamers seeking a low-cost solution.

There are only a few factors to take into account. The Recon 70 works everywhere, has passable audio for conversation, and is comfortable to wear for extended periods.

You are in luck if you’re looking for a straightforward plug-and-play alternative. Yet, even by Turtle Beach standards, many fantastic choices are still available if something else is needed.

Nonetheless, if finding something inexpensive that functions effectively is all that matters to you, this is a fantastic choice.
